As the summer of 2016 was Sonic’s 25th birthday Sega wanted some content for ‘Sonic Dash’ to celebrate. This turned into an updated version of the Green Hills level from the original Sonic game all those years ago. I worked on this alongside another freelance artist in-house at the Hardlight studio.
The assets and textures had to fit in with the ‘SonicDash’ world but still give the feel and look of the original and it was all approved by Sonic Team at Sega in Japan.
My brief from the Lead Artist and Game Director at Hardlight was to build and texture track pieces to reflect a modern version of the Green Hills level from the original Sonic game. Then to get them, along with track objects built by another artist, into Unity and working in game. Once the pieces were working in game a demo was sent to Japan for approval.
The level was released as a special event where you could win it along with an original version of Sonic.
